Background
The project is inspired by an idea proposed by cognitive neuroscientist Heather Berlin on BBC's The Forum, advocating for young people to spend regular, compulsory time with the elderly. Dr. Berlin suggests an “adopt-an-elder” program where individuals at age 18 are required to adopt an elderly person (75 years or older), either a family member, a friend, or someone matched through a platform like matchanelder.com.
The aim is to facilitate mutual benefits: elderly people enjoy youthful energy and interaction, while young people gain life lessons, wisdom, and an understanding of mortality and life's priorities.
Problem
The core challenge here is addressing societal stereotypes about the elderly and bridging the generational gap.
There's a need to shift young people's perception of the elderly and highlight the mutual benefits of intergenerational connections, countering the undervaluation of older generations and their experiences.
Solution: The AgeMix Collaborative
A philanthropic organization that facilitates voluntary connections between the young and the elderly in Toronto, mirroring the essence of Dr. Berlin's idea but with a voluntary, community-driven approach.
